Arestin®
Arestin® is a powerful antibiotic that our dentist, Dr. Eric Spellman, uses to treat gum disease. In fact, our cosmetic and restorative dentist, Dr. Spellman uses it in conjunction with scaling and root planing. First, our advanced trained dentist, Dr. Spellman performs the scaling and root planing. Then, he delivers Arestin® in the form of microspheres to the infection area. Ultimately, helping the healing process as it will dissolve on its own. Also, Arestin® treats a local infection instead of taking an oral antibiotic.
Crown Lengthening
Crown lengthening is performed by a dentist who specializes in disease and disorders of the bone tissue and gums that support the teeth.
Dr. Spellman performs crown lengthening on a single tooth, several, or even the entire gum line. First, Dr. Spellman applies local anesthesia for the crown lengthening procedure. Then, he uses the Waterlase IPLUS laser to treat the gum disease. Ultimately, healing happens within days instead of weeks and the process causes less soreness than surgery.
Periodontal – Gum Disease
Periodontal gum disease is an infection that causes the gums and surrounding tissue to be inflamed. It’s the most common reason for tooth loss and affects almost everyone at some point. Regular oral hygiene can help to prevent gum disease. However, frequent, professional teeth cleaning and
dental hygiene appointments at Eric Spellman, DMD in Larchmont are still needed to remove plaque and tartar.
Scaling & Root Planing
Regular dental
teeth cleanings look after the visible parts of the teeth. Scaling and root planing removes tartar and plaque from below the gumline, and smooths the surfaces of the teeth, facilitating healing. Scaling is the only way to remove tartar from below the gum line.
Occlusal Adjustment
Do you wake up with sore jaws? Do you feel as if you can’t quite “find” your bite? The above often happens if you have missing or loose teeth, and you might need an occlusal adjustment. It corrects your bite’s alignment. It’s a minimally invasive process and doesn’t cause many discomforts.
Periodontal Splinting (Weak Teeth)
If your teeth are unstable or loose due to gum recession, bone loss, or trauma, intracoronal or extracoronal splinting can a solution. Intracoronal splinting is semi-permanent, whereas extracoronal is more suited to conditions where long-term support is not warranted.
Osseous Surgery / Pocket Reduction
Osseous surgery is a means of treating gum disease. At times, patients with gum disease develop holes in the bone surrounding the teeth. Therefore, the surgery reshapes the bones to eliminate the defects. It is known as a pocket reduction in the dental world. Also, it repositions the tissue of the gums to facilitate more natural cleaning. In most cases, the Waterlase IPLUS laser can reduce the pocket and regenerate bone without the need for osseous surgery. For that reason, instead of having pain for weeks, majority of our patients are sore for just a few days.
Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery
Cosmetic periodontal surgery works in two ways – it improves the appearance of your smile while restoring functionality by preventing gum recession. If your teeth appear short, you may be a candidate for cosmetic periodontal surgery. Our dentist, Dr. Spellman reshapes the bone and gum tissue to deliver a more natural appearance. Another option of cosmetic gum disease surgery is using the Waterlase IPLUS laser, which is more precise than using a scalpel. As a result, patients feel less sore and heal faster.
Laser Periodontal Therapy- Laser Gum Disease Treatment
Laser periodontal therapy is a revolutionary treatment for periodontal disease. Perhaps you’ve been told that you need gum surgery, and you’re worried about having a dentist cut into your gums. With laser periodontal therapy, there’s no scalpel and minimal bleeding. In fact, it is often a great alternative to traditional gum surgery. The surgery, known by the acronym
LANAP for Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure. This procedure is FDA approved to reduce pocketing and regenerate bone instead of having osseous surgery. Healing is quick, and it dramatically reduces pain. In fact, only 2 percent of dentists in the country have this laser.
Non-Surgical Gum Disease (Periodontal) Treatment
Periodontal treatment doesn’t always mean surgery. Usually, periodontal disease will respond well to non-invasive treatment. During your consultation, our dentist, Dr. Eric Spellman will assess your condition. Then, he will recommend the best course of action that may include non-invasive therapies. Dr. Spellman firmly believes that you can achieve periodontal health using non-surgical methods.
